Chapter hundred and twenty four: Stuck

Ursla tried not to appear terrified but she was pointing a weapon at the devil of Aradale. And he was looking at her like he wanted to rip her to shreds.

Alexander relaxed but he didn't move an inch from the place he stood. He was trying to understand the type of loyalty that would make someone like the girl on his bed do something as idiotic as threaten him with the most unusual weapon on earth...a bloody spoon!

Alexander noted how easy it would be to snap her neck but if he remembered correctly, Ursla did save his life when he was an injured wolf. She saved his life the day his father was killed. Alexander tried to master some sympathy for the young girl but he couldn't muster any.

Ever since he came back from the south with sixteen human heads, he was different. Everything about him smelt different. The anger he felt towards his sister was gone, the feelings he had for Janessa and the sympathy and gratitude he should be feeling for Ursla was nonexistent.

Alexander felt numb. He hadn't felt like that in a very long time. Not since the day he stumbled on his thirteen year old sister about to be crowned Queen because he was presumed dead. It took a while and it didn't happen immediately but he started feeling again. Slowly, he became human again.

But then a bunch of barbarian disrespected him and inflicted pain on the woman he specifically asked to be left unharmed and all hell was let loose and now, he couldn't put the hell back.

So, now he settled for staring at Ursla and imagining ways to end her life that won't upset the woman on his bed.

"Put the spoon away. You are trembling" Alexander pointed out the obvious to the girl who appeared to careless about her trembling hand.

"Why did you let her come back if you knew exactly what she was going to find out? Why did you forbid her from coming back knowing she would never agree to stay in Namura after hearing the truth? This..." Ursla pointed at her injuries "This is your fault, your highness. You are the reason, she is hurt"

Alexander was uninterested in having that conversation with Ursla. Everything about his posture screamed that he was uncomfortable and annoyed.

"What on earth and in hell makes you think you are worthy enough to have this conversation with me? You are just an annoying little girl on my bed pissing me off!" Alexander finally yelled and it made Jamie stir.

Jamie's eyes fluttered severally before it opened. She looked around and she first saw Ursla by her side and she saw the spoon. Jamie followed the direction that it was pointing and saw Alexander at the end.

"Ursla put it down!" Jamie ordered.

She turned as soon as she saw Alexander moving closer to where Ursla and she were. And without thinking, she used herself as shield.

Jamie wondered who she was protecting, the king from the menacing spoon or Ursla from his angry hands.

"Ursla, put the spoon down!" Jamie ordered again and Ursla obeyed.

"She is sorry. She won't hurt you, Alexander" Jamie apologized as soon as she could.

Alexander's face was blank. And he stared at her with equally blank eyes.

Jamie waited for him to say something to her but he didn't.

"What is going to happen to me?" She asked him as soon as she was sure that she had secured Ursla's throat.

"You!" Alexander pointed at Ursla "Get lost! Now!"

Ursla wanted to stay behind but Jamie nodded and she begrudgingly left the king's bedroom.

There was silence for a few seconds as Jamie wondered what her fate would be.

"Alexander, I am so..."

"Do you still want to be Queen of the west?"

Alexander's question surprised Jamie. She blinked and tried to gather her thought.

Then she felt a little bit of joy, he still felt something for her. At least she still had that.

"Do you want to be Queen or not?" Alexander's voice was strict and devoid of emotion.

It sent chills down Jamie's spine.

"Y-yes" she whispered.

"Great, as soon as you are able you will be move to the new Queen's Chamber and Janessa, keep your feral maid far away from me" Alexander turned and he wanted to walk out when Jamie spoke.

"Why do you want me back?" Jamie wondered why she asked that question. Does she really want to know the answer?

Alexander turned and watched her curiously. "The sharks were beginning to circle again when your absence became obvious. I don't have time for the whole fiasco of finding a new bride and if not you, I will be saddle with another replacement. So, you can as well keep your head and be Queen. It just much easier"

Jamie felt her heart skip. It felt like something was ripping her to shreds.

"Alright" She whispered to him "You said there was a new Queen's Chamber, where is that now?"

"The northern part of the castle I am told. Is this question and answer section over? I need to save my shadow and his new mysterious bride"

Alexander stared at her. Jamie blinked, she wanted to ask a question but the hostily emanating from him was suffocating but taking her last bravado, she forged ahead.

"What happened to Sir Judd and Queen Eileen?" Jamie waited patiently for him to answer.

*******

One week earlier

Eileen stared at the drapes. She had spent the last half hour getting acquainted with them. Yes! She had counted the ropes, exactly ninety two of them on each side except the side closest to her. Those were ninety one.

She felt her body shake for a second, slightly. The carriage must have stepped on a stone. Eileen's hand instinctively reached out for the nearest solid thing to her. It was a mistake.

She heard a slight grunt and she immediately took her hand away like she touched a scorching sun.

Eileen recomposed herself. The silence in the carriage was almost suffocating... almost like a descending cold blanket, trying to keep her down. Eileen tried to keep to herself, anything to keep her mind busy except she had run out of drapes to count.

Her eyes wandered for a while darting from one thing to another, anything but the presence beside her. She could hardly ignore him. He was twice her size and towered over her like a giant. And he grunted at interval like he was in physical pain.

Eileen pushed her mind away from him. And it landed on the wall of the carriage. There were dots on the wall, about a gazillion of them. She could count them? It will probably be enough to keep her busy till they arrived at their destination. They just had a few more hours till they reached the kingdom of Koi in the Eastern hemisphere.

Eileen's mind instinctively tried to go back to the events of the past week. Event that got her sitting side by side of a grunting silence mongering being that made the carriage uncomfortable. Instead Eileen fought her mind and she started counting.

One purple dot. Two purple dots. Three purple dots.

She couldn't believe it's been three hours in the carriage and yet, he didn't utter a word to her. It was becoming unbearable. And she could hear her own heart beat.

Four purple dots. Five purple dots.

What number came after five? This was ridiculous. How long can she keep up with this. She slowly pulled the shade of the window and looked out of it. They were passing through a village and they would need to give the horses water.

"Do you want to stop and get a little rest?" Her voice was a bare whisper. Her eyes turned and fell on her co-carriage occupant but that wasn't the correct description. She should use the correct description and maybe it wouldn't be this unpalatable.

"Husband" Eileen reminded herself. He was her husband, now. She would have to get use to it but not the silence! She can't deal with the silence, anymore.

For the first time since the three hours they had been proclaimed husband and wife, she looked at him. His eyes were closed and he appeared nonchalant except for the way his right hand touched the hilt of his sword. It was unsettling.

"We are approaching an inn, do you want to stop and eat breakfast?" She asked again.

She figured he would open his eyes but he didn't. It was kind of annoying actually. Eileen was annoyed. What kind of a husband keeps his eyes close throughout the duration of a conversation or a freaking carriage ride! It was... annoying.

He stirred like he was proving he wasn't made out of stone and possibly because her incessant questions were beginning to get on his nerves.

"Are you tired or hungry?" His gruff voice almost made Eileen jump.

Thank gracious! So he can talk. She was beginning to worry she married a blind, deaf and dumb man.

"No" Eileen answered. It was a lie.. She was tired and needed a few minutes break from the heart wrenching silence in the carriage.
