Chapter hundred and twenty six: As good as I can be.

Jamie looked around the new Queen's Chamber and it looked the same but still somehow it was different. It had the same large bed with green veils descending from the support above the bed. Jamie took a step closer and tied the veil to the sides.

The veil was soft and her hand lingered just a little bit longer. The room looked like it was decorated by a woman. Her former bedchamber didn't have veils.

Jamie lay on the bed and stared at the roof. Unlike her former bed chamber, this new room was devoid of fading stars on the roof. It was just empty.

Jamie knew she should ring for food or at least a bowl of broth but she was too tired to. She was exhausted.

Moving into the new bedchamber when she should have been resting was beginning to take a toll on her. But she wanted to leave Alexander's room as soon as she could to stay out of his way since it was the way he preferred it. And even though Jamie wanted to salvage their relationship she left just to show her appreciation for his benevolence but she had no idea that the new bedchamber was on the opposite side of the castle.

Jamie knew it was intentional. With her here, there was no way they could bump into each other. They may as well be living in different villages and somehow Jamie was supposed to adjust to this particular arrangement.

She has to adjust to this particular Alexander. This Alexander that won't be grabbing her just for the fun of kissing her senseless or wear commoners clothes to please her or pleasure her until her toes curled.

This Alexander gave promises that he would be cold and distant. And Jamie just has to adjust to that. It was exhausting. Jamie was exhausted.

Jamie pulled the blanket over her head and went right to sleep.

When next she opened her eyes, someone was in her room. It was Rachael, her former lady's maid. Taking the morsel of strength in her, Jamie sat upright.

"Your majesty, your bathe is ready" Rachael curtsied slightly before she opened the wardrobe that seemed bigger and newer than her old one and took out a purple dress and some towels.

"Rachael, it's nice to see you" Jamie tried to smile but it was almost too painful to and Rachael didn't seem too interested in her pleasantries.

The lady's maid gave her a slight nod before opening a door Jamie didn't even know existed and disappeared into it. When she came out again, she wasn't holding the purple dress or towels.

"Your majesty, your warm bath waits" Rachael pointed to the room she disappeared into earlier. She almost looked different.

This Rachael didn't smile or give off any emotion. She was blank and Jamie didn't know the reason to it.

Was she still grieving losing Judd to Eileen or simply grieving his disappearing from the face of the earth?

Jamie stood up and the room started to spin for a second. She stood still and waited it out. She didn't ask for help and Rachael didn't offer one to her.

Jamie was surprised she made it all the way to the smaller room without her weak knees giving out.

"What is this place called?" Jamie asked Rachael.

Rachael came closer and helped Jamie remove the lowly dress she was wearing.

"It's called a bathing room. Lady Lucinda May insisted on the addition to the queen's chamber. She says it's rampant in the northern hemisphere now" Rachael answered with a bland voice.

Jamie thought she would ask her about the marks on her body but strangely, Rachael didn't. She only helped Jamie enter the large tub filled with water.

The warm water both made Jamie's body relax and ach at the same time. She closed her eyes temporarily as a coping mechanism.

Jamie opened them just in time to stop Rachael from using the brush on her.

"Do you need anything else, your majesty?" Rachael asked her.

Jamie could swear that she heard a hint of anger in her maid's voice but maybe her ears were playing tricks on her just like the rest of her life.

"Yes. I haven't washed my hair in days. Can you wash it?" Jamie told her and closed her eyes again.

Rachael nodded and left the room. Soon afterwards, she came back with some things in a basket. And she washed the Queen's hair.

Rachael's hands going into her scalp as she washes her hair was strangely soothing. Jamie must have stayed in the tub for ten more minutes after she was done with her bathe because she had no strength left in her to stand up.

She took the towel from Rachel and dried her body as gently as she could because of her bruises.

She went into the main chamber and stood in front of the mirror and she was surprised to see the towel that was originally light pink with dark patches now.

She allowed the towel wrapped around her hair to slip away after some seconds.

Jamie exhaled sharply.

"Rachael" her lips trembling just a little bit "Rachael did you use vinegar to wash my hair?" Jamie whispered more to herself than Rachael.

"I used white vinegar because of the dirty tangled hair I had to put in order" Rachael wasn't apologetic. She simply tried to explain away her actions.

"But I told you that white vinegar...turns my hair" Jamie let out a breath "You did this on purpose, didn't you Rachael? You turned my black hair..." Jamie couldn't say it out loud.

Rachael kept her straight face on Jamie but she still didn't apologize.

"Are you going to ask the king to execute me like he did the sixteen heads he brought back from the South?" Rachael asked Jamie instead.

"You may leave my chamber, Rachael and you are relieved of your duty as my personal servant. Send for Ursla instead" Jamie tried to hold in the tears as Rachael turned and left her room.

She stared at herself in the big mirror. Her former short black hair was now red. She looked like a whole new person. Jamie sniffed back the hot snot and blinked back the tears.

She had no time for such rubbish. She needed to figure out the type of Queen, Alexander needed her to be and just be that.

A slight knock and the door opened, ushering in Ursla. She rushed to her side almost immediately.

"Your hair.... Jamie"

"Rachael, used white vinegar to wash off the black dye and now I am back to being a red hair like the gods intended" Jamie explained in a nutshell.

"I will get a black dye right away!" Ursla turned around like she even knew where to look for the liquid.

"No! I can't be late for breakfast. It won't be a good look after the king's benevolence to us" Jamie stopped her.

"You should stay in bed. You are obviously still in pain" Ursla told her and picked up the purple dress to take it back into the wardrobe.

"No. It is my duty and so help me God, I shall perform it. We could make Aradale our home if I do well enough as Queen. We can stay here. It's better than sleeping in the forest and getting captured. And it's better than going back to the Eastern hemisphere" Jamie saw that Ursla wanted to argue with her and she gave Ursla a stern look.

"Yes, your royal highness... I mean your majesty"

Ursla helped Jamie get dressed and she made sure the corset wasn't too tight too.

She did her best to style the red hair in a way that won't draw attention to Jamie and in no time, Jamie was presentable.

King Alexander wanted a small breakfast without the daily ritual and commotion. It was why he ordered for his breakfast to be served in the garden and for the rest of the people joining him for breakfast to be informed according.

King Alexander didn't mind that the duke and duchess would be joining them when he made this decree. He was beyond caring about mundane things.

Jamie wasn't informed about the change in venue for breakfast. And after the million stabbing footsteps she took to get to the royal dining hall, she found it empty.

"Your majesty" Ginger bowed as soon as he saw the queen.

"Where is everyone? Was breakfast cancelled?" Jamie inquired from him.

"No, your majesty it was moved to the garden. I apologize, I should have informed you. But i assumed you won't be there because of your ailment" Ginger looked terrified of the mistake he made.

Jamie managed a small smile to calm him down. She turned and she hastened up to the garden ignoring the pain she felt with each step.. Jamie was determined to make it there even if she had to crawl.
