Chapter hundred and twenty seven: unexpected with the expected

When Jamie finally made it to the garden, breakfast was almost over and the people seated were having dessert already.

Jamie stopped and hid behind one of the bigger flowers. She was late because it took an awful long amount of time to walk from her new chamber to this side of the castle.

She tried to slowly walk away when her dress caught on one of the flowers and she brushed her blistered calf on the rough edge of the flower.

"Ahhh!" Jamie screamed before she could stop herself. The pain went through her in waves like they were playing the game of pin the donkey's tail on her.

Alexander noticed and stood up swiftly. Everyone did since it was impossible to ignore the scream that came from behind the Rose flowers.

Alexander walked to where she was and picked her up. Jamie tried to stop the tears from flowing but she couldn't.

The duke was the first to get close to the King and his injured Queen.

"Will she be alright?" The duke asked.

If Jamie had looked at the duke, she would have seen a man with great resemblance to the king. At least they had the same chin and eyes.

If she had looked further she would have seen the duchess and the princess coming closer to them.

But Jamie didn't look yet somehow she knew exactly what was going on.

Jamie pressed her face into Alexander's chest. "Please, don't let them see me like this.... please, Alexander"

She expected him to drop her on the ground so the whole world could see her. They would see her down on her luck and defeated but instead, she felt him tighten his grip around her.

"She is alright. Stay back!"

Jamie couldn't believe what she was hearing. She didn't believe it but she felt him walk away with her in his arms. She took her face off his chest as soon as she was able to.

"You don't have to carry me, Milord. I can walk. I don't want to burden you" She whispered to him.

At first he stopped walking and he looked at her. Alexander of the week before would have asked her to be quiet while he took care of her and the Jamie of last week would have threatened to plunge a knife into his heart if he carried her like a child through the castle. But they were different now.

Who knew a week was time enough to change a person?

"Your feet...they hurt right?" Alexander asked her instead.

"Yes" Jamie answered.

"If you don't want me to take you to your chamber then I can hand you off to another knight to take you, Janessa. Out of the two options which do you prefer?" Alexander asked her.

His voice wasn't unkind but it wasn't kind either. It was bland like he was just speaking as a way of passing across a message.

"You.... and I will be quiet now" Jamie murmured and Alexander resumed walking.

Soon, he was in her bedchamber placing her on her bed and pulling the blanket over her. For a moment he stared at her hair.

"What happened to your hair?" Alexander wondered why he asked.

This wasn't giving Janessa space like he promised he would.

"Rachael used white vinegar to wash it. I will dye it back to black as soon as I am able to" Jamie ran her fingers through her hair. It was the color of a burning flame - vibrate red.

"Leave it, it suits your face" Alexander told her but he knew deep down that Janessa would dye it back just for satisfaction of annoying him.

It was why it came as a surprise to Alexander when he heard her reply.

"If it is milord's wish then I shall obey"

Her answer made Alexander apprehensive and put off. What was going on? Who was this woman on his bed?

"And if I ask you to dye it blonde, would you?" Alexander asked her just to be certain he was getting the whole picture on this new Janessa.

"Yes. I will do anything you want and I would do my best to be the perfect queen this hemisphere needs, your highness. I will repay your favor towards me, my king. I will be the perfect little queen you want and need"

Alexander was yet to get over the shock when he heard a soft knock on the door and the door opened. It was Ursla.

"Your highness... your majesty, someone called Lady Lucinda May is here to see you. She said the rest of the queen's ladies in waiting are here too. Should...I send them away?" Ursla asked and waited for a response.

She also fought every single bone in her body from yelling at Jamie to stay in bed and heal.

"No" Jamie answered.

"Yes, send them away. The Queen is in no condition to attend to them" Alexander answered.

"You don't understand your highness. We are behind on the preparation of the winter charity festivities. If I don't start planning it now, we might not get everything done in time. A good Queen must have everything done in proper time and order, no tardiness is allowed" even as Jamie spoke, she kept fighting the urge to keep her eyes closed.

Alexander saw that her color was different and he placed his hand on her forehead.

"You are burning up. The winter charity can wait. Ursla, tell Lucinda that she can start preparation while the Queen recuperate. And tell Rachael to bring a wet cloth and water for the Queen's face" Alexander ordered Ursla like they were not long ago threatening each other with bodily harm.

"The Queen relieved Rachael of her duties earlier-"

Jamie interrupted Ursla from finishing her statement "If the king wants Rachael to be my lady's maid then I shall forgive her of her wrong and accept her back"

Alexander looked at her again. What the hell was going on? It was like someone replaced the woman he had feelings for with a shell and it was making him bloody uncomfortable and angry.

"No. Ursla can get the wet cloth. She can be the Queen's maid now" Alexander told her.

Jamie's eyes became a little bit wider as she spoke this time around.

"I beseech the king to allow Ursla to be whatever she wants to be here at Aradale. She can't be a maid to me...she is my best friend"

"Very well then, find Megan and relay to her that the Queen needs a temporary lady's maid" Alexander ordered Ursla and returned his attention to Jamie.

Ursla opened the door and left.

She was lying down now with her eyes closed. He could see her chest rise and fall softly. Alexander exhaled. Without thinking, he opened the blanket and joined her on the bed. Her body was warm to the touch as he pulled her into his arms.

Good lord! It was so fucking difficult to hate her, especially now that she looked like a ghost of her past self.

Ursla hastened to deliver the news to Lady Lucinda May. With the worry lines on her face, Ursla concluded she must be an ally of the Queen but she didn't have time to stay and chat. She had to find Megan and have her deliver a wet cloth to the king.

With no idea of the workings of the gigantic castle, Ursla sort for the only person she knew there, sir derrick.

Ursla found him near the well staring into nothing in particular.

"I see your head is still intact" Derrick didn't turn around to look at Ursla.

"For now, it is. Do knights in the west always this idle?" Ursla asked him.

"No, just me. I have come to realize that if you don't take a break everyone in a while then you will wake up one day, a hundred and two years old with no idea how the world works, that You've been left behind" Derrick answered.

"Bollocks! You are a philosopher" Ursla rolled her eyes slightly "I need to locate Megan. Can you show me the way?"

Derrick stood up from where he sat "follow me. My name is Derrick. What is your name?"

"Ursla....my name is Ursla"

Derrick took the stairs to the second floor. Ursla could perceive the aroma of freshly baked bread. Derrick stopped and pointed to the door on the right.

"You will find Megan there"

"Thank you, Sir Derrick" Ursla took a step forward when Derrick stopped her.

"What are you doing after? He asked her.

"Are you going to tell me you want to take me on a picnic later and get to know me?" Ursla teased him.

"Something like that… Meet me near the well at noon. Don't be late, I won't wait" Derrick walked away leaving a puzzled Ursla behind.

Towards noon, Ursla made her way to the drawing well and like promised, Derrick was there waiting for her. But instead of a picnic basket, he was holding two swords.

"Are you ready?" He threw one of the swords to her and Ursla caught it.

At first she was puzzled but then she smiled and followed him deeper towards the woods.
