Chapter hundred and forty four: hidden under the sun 2

Luther Judd stared out the window. For a minute, he was totally immersed in his thoughts.

Eileen watched him from the bed she sat. She was a Queen without a kingdom and he was a knight that was forcibly removed from his. The past week had been all about survival and he had protected her fiercely. But Eileen didn't know whether it was because he was a knight whose primary instinct was to protect or he almost died protecting her because he felt something other than hatred for her. It was confusing and she was reluctant to find out the real reason.

Eileen knew something was bothering her husband. She could see it in his stooped posture and the way he stared at nothing. And it wasn't because she yelled at him. It was something bigger than that.

"Luther?" At first her voice was a whisper. "Luther, are you alright?"

He ignored her but Eileen knew it wasn't intentional but because he didn't hear her call him.

She stood up and moved closer to him and touched him on his elbow. He was startled.

"Sorry. I didn't mean to startle you. Are you alright? Is this because I yelled at you earlier?" Eileen asked him.

If Judd was a smiling man, he would have smiled to sound more convincing but he wasn't. Instead, he turned around and looked at her.

"No. I don't cherish being yelled at like hormonal Lad but I get it. You were worried even though it was unnecessary and I should be ready to be yelled at some more in the future since I am a Knight and doing stupid dangerous things is my job requirement" Luther wanted it to sound like a joke but his voice was too serious.

Eileen tilted her head to the right "Did you just try to make a joke?"

"Yes" he nodded "I am terrible at jokes, I know"

"Well, I am smiling" Eileen showed her teeth to him. It was a fake smile but it made Judd chuckle.

"See, you are smiling and...that is how you make a joke" Eileen's smile this time was real.

Judd then went ahead to surprise her by moving closer to her and planting a kiss on her cheek. Eileen blushed without meaning to.

"Your face is red" Judd told her

"I am blushing, silly" Eileen told him.

Judd had a quizzical look like he had no idea what she was talking about.

"Blushing is when…" Eileen started to explain but then she saw the raised eyebrow and she realized he was making another joke.

"Good one. Now, tell me what's bothering you" she demanded like it was her birthright.

Judd hated that she ruined the little happiness he was able to muster with her inquisition.

"Nothing is wrong. Don't worry about it" Judd brushed her concern aside.

Eileen didn't believe him but she nodded. She went back to the bed but after a moment of sitting down, she spoke to him again.

"You willingly jumped in front of a sword for me. Held me when I was shivering from cold, fought off a second batch of bandits with a fatal injury yet sharing what's obviously bothering you is impossible for you?" Eileen complained to him.

"Eileen, don't make this thing into what it is not" Judd turned to look at her

"Do you think I am making this into something bigger? You have a problem Luther but you won't accept that you do" Eileen might have been tapping into the annoyance of him disappearing earlier that morning without notice.

"I don't want to argue with you, Eileen. I really don't but if you keep seeing something where there is nothing then I will just leave this chamber until you calm down" Judd threatened.

Eileen found it infuriating that his voice was still calm and low like whatever they were arguing about was not worth his time.

"No need to walk out Judd, I will do it for you" Eileen stood up and walked out of the room.

Luther clenched his fist. This was why sleeping dogs should be allowed to lie in peace. First, it was the king with his incessant prying of the past and now, his wife.

Luther Judd wondered when people would stop trying to know information, they were better off not knowing, when people would emulate him. He is not one to poke a sleeping tiger.

Luther wondered whether he was required to go after her but what was he supposed to say to calm her down since he still believe she was being difficult on purpose.

Bloody hell! This was why he never wanted a wife to begin with.

Judd went after her all the same but Eileen was gone.

Eileen fumed with anger. She was so angry that she didn't know when she walked past Jamie on the hallway.

"Eileen, are you alright?" Jamie called out after her.

She wondered how she would be able to look at Eileen's husband in the face knowing that Alexander killed his father.

She watched as Eileen walked back to her, her lips were tightly pressed together like she was keeping something inside. Her nose flared and there was a throbbing line on her temple. Eileen was about ready to burst.

"Are you alright, Eileen?" Jamie asked again.

"Do I look alright to you?" Eileen's fumed with rage.

"No" Jamie's answer sounded more like a question.

"What a mighty good idea it was to marry me off to a stone!" Eileen pointed her index finger at Jamie.

"Judd?" Jamie wondered what Judd must have done to make a good natured Queen like Eileen into a raving crazy woman.

"No! I am being unfair to all the stones everywhere. Luther is like the sun, useful but scorching... hurtful in an annoying kind of way. Unfeeling and ruthless in his dealings, he has no remorse or zeal in understanding someone's feelings. He is the sun and he is killing me" Eileen threw her hands up in the air like she was dealing with the impossible.

"Okay, come on" Jamie took her hand and dragged her into a small room at the end of the hallway.

"Where are we?" Eileen asked and looked around.

"I don't know. When I was little I hide here whenever I don't want to be found by my siblings especially when I have done something to deserve a spanking like shave Elliot's eyebrows while he slept" Jamie's statement made Eileen smile. Slowly, the rage she felt started leaving her body.

"Thanks for making up that story to make me smile" Eileen said and rubbed her forehead.

Jamie wanted to tell her that she didn't make up the story but instead she smiled just a little bit.

"What did Judd do to you to turn you into this person I don't recognize" Jamie asked with a compassionate voice.

"I am just frustrated. My kingdom is gone. Basically, Judd is the only family I have left yet he keeps me at arm's length. It didn't bother me before when we newly married but now...after everything we've been through together...I don't know what I am supposed to be feeling. Is he a stranger to me or is he the man that risked his life to save mine?" Eileen turned to Jamie and asked again.

"Is he a stranger or is he the man that risked his life for me?"

Jamie understood her delimma. She touched Eileen's wrist. She was sympathetic but she was going to tell her the truth.

"You are not asking the right question, Eileen?"

"I am not?"

"Yes. The question should be...does Judd want to be a stranger or the man that risked his life for you? When you ask the right questions, it becomes easier to get the answers...at least, so I was told"

Eileen exhaled.

"What does Judd want? That is the right question" Eileen nodded "Thank you, Jamie"

"You like him, don't you?" Jamie asked her.

"We've been through more in our one week of marriage than people who have been married for years" Eileen didn't give her a straight answer, instead she opened the door and walked out.

When she returned to the bedchamber they share, Judd was there waiting for her.

"I was looking for you, Eileen" His voice was still calm but concerned.

"Do you want us to be strangers?" Eileen blurted out.

"What do you mean?" Judd sounded confused.

"I just want to know if I should care about you or not. What do you want from this marriage?" Eileen asked in a mellowed voice.

Judd was speechless, he had no idea how to answer this question or what Eileen wanted from him.

"I give a crap about your safety and I obviously couldn't stand by while you get hurt but...we both know this is not a love match" Judd went with the truth.

"Good. At least, now I know how to act appropriately around you. I never thanked you for saving my life. I should have... Thank you, Luther and if I ever get my kingdom back, I will repay you accordingly"

"You don't have to-" Judd started to say but Eileen stop him.
