Chapter thirty four: Wolf encounter

When Ursla came to, the princess was kneeling over her, holding her head in her arm. She was feeling drowsy yet she looked around the forest trying to assimilate as much as her distorted mind could. The princess's hand was bleeding and Ursla surged to her feet in an instant. The ground kept moving under her feet making her unsteady but she charged towards the wolf that was lying by the corner with the silver dagger she pulled out of nowhere.

Jamie got in-between the wolf and her former slave girl.

"Move out of the way, milady. I have to kill it before it awoke"

Jamie didn't bulge instead she moved closer to the injured wolf to pet it.

"No one is going to hurt you"

"I am going to hurt it, Princess Jamie" Ursla wondered whether the princess heard her the first time.

"It needs our help, Ursla"

"Of course milady, you just need to let me stick this silver dagger into its heart. I will be gentle. You have my word"

Ursla moved forward to attack the wolf but Jamie used her body as shield forcing Ursla to stop.

"It took a bite out of your hand!" cried Ursla in frustration to the princess.

"It was hungry and it didn't know any better. You won't eat us now, would you?" Jamie asked the half consciousness wolf. The wolf opened its eyes brief before closing it and growling in pain.

"Of course, it will eat us!" Ursla looked at the mad princess with rage.

She knew it was no ordinary wolf, Ursla could see it in the wolf's eyes and his scent.

"People and animals are alike, Ursla. We all tend to do stupid things when we are hurt. How can I save it?" Princess Jamie asked her former slave girl "before you answer, do not suggest plunging the dagger into it again"

"Milady? If I was a guesser, I would deduce that the tip of the silver blade used in stabbing him is still somewhere inside this blasted beast. Take it out and it will heal"

Princess Jamie took out her ankle blade and hesitated for a while.

"You will kill it before it has a chance at living" Ursla said and fled.

Jamie was baffled at the sight of her former slave girl fleeing but it didn't last long as she came back with some leaves.

"This will make it go to sleep and I will take it out"

Jamie and Ursla carried the beast to the cottage using the royal carriage.

Ursla was able to take out the tip of a silver blade and covered the injury with a healing leaf.

When they were all done, Jamie sat outside and rest her head on the wall with her eyes closed. She was hungry but she wasn't allowed to complain either.

Ursla sat not far away from her sharpening her silver blade while she glared dangerously at the beast.

"Why did you come to my rescue, Ursla?" Jamie asked without opening her eyes.

"The wolf was going to kill you" Ursla kept sharpening her blade.

"Why aren't you far from here? You are no longer a slave" Jamie was curious and so she opened her eyes to look at Ursla.

"I made it to the southern path to the river, almost made it across. But then something I had tried my utmost best not to think about finally caught up with me. I had nowhere to go, milady. My family is gone and so is my tribe. I am all alone" Ursla stopped sharpening her weapon for a minute.

"It doesn't have to be like that, Ursla. You are welcome to stay in the cottage with me" Jamie offered.

"Is milady regaling on her word? Is milady going to make me a slave again?"

"No. You are welcome to stay in the cottage as the guest of the princess. You did save my life but I have a condition, Ursla"

"May I be so bold as to ask milady what condition?"

"You are to teach your princess how to fight, Ursla"

"Yes, milady"

When Jamie held the sound of galloping horse coming towards the cottage, she smiled. Arabella remembered she had a sister after all.

Ursla threw her blade ready for a fight.

"They are friends, Ursla. But you have my permission to kill them if they come without food" Jamie smiled when she saw Ursla's hand tighten around the blade. The girl can't take a joke.

The horseman stopped. He came bearing food like Jamie predicted.

"Your Royal highness, Princess Arabella of Namura, asked for the food items to be delivered to you, milady"

"Thank my sister, horseman. You may depart"

"Thank you, milady"

The horseman left and Jamie smiled at the food she was currently holding.

If she was at the castle she would dine with the royal family properly but she had to start adjusting to the life she has now. She could have ordered the former slave girl to set the table for her but she didn't. Instead she entered inside and opened the food and started eating.

Ursla stood by the corner and stared at the food with raw hunger.

"When last did you have a proper meal, Ursla,?" Jamie asked

"Two days ago, milady"

"Have a seat. Dine with your princess. After all you are a guest in my cottage and we don't starve guests"

Ursla didn't need any more encouragement; she took the chair opposite the princess and fed her hungry stomach vicariously.

"Who thought you how to fight, Ursla?"

"My father"

Mentioning her father brought smile to Ursla's face.

"Seems like you were blessed with a kind Papa just like I am" Jamie smiled. It was something they now had in common.

"No milady. My father did not send me into a forest over run with creatures like that blasted creature outside"

Ursla did not like that her father was liken to the beast than killed her brother.

"Papa had his reasons. He knew I would thrive more here than constricts of the castle. Papa knows best. And if you speak ill of my father, you will be in need of a new head"

"Yes, milady"

When they woke up the next morning, the wolf was gone.
