Chapter thirty seven: No time to say sorry.

Now.

Alexander could see that the paralytic effect the fruit had on Jamie had almost wore off, by the way, she was able to move her toes.

Good! She can run then. Alexander could hear the horse galloping towards them. It was almost nightfall and he knew his lead knight and the king's knight were already scouring the forest for him.

"Janessa. Try and stand up, if you can" Alexander urged her.

"Why?" She asked him. She was half asleep and half awake.

"Because my knights are approaching and I need you to untie me" Alexander was getting apprehensive.

Jamie tried to slowly move her body and she was surprised she was able to.

She was on her feet in less than a second but made no attempt to untie the king.

"I shall be on my way, his Highness" Jamie picked up the basket she packed for her journey and the scarf that laid on the ground. It was almost nightfall. It would be hard for the king's knight to track her.

"Janessa, untie me! That is an order from your King"

Jamie knew that tone of voice well enough, her father used it all the time. When a king gives an order, people are required to take it. But Jamie reminded herself that she wasn't from Aradale or even the western hemisphere. And so, King Alexander had no real authority over her.

She grab the basket and fled.

"Max, do something!" Alexander barked at his wolf.

"I can't! No full moon" Max was just as upset as his human form.

"Well, I guess it is up to me. They are going to kill her if we don't stop it!"

Alexander stood up very slowly. Any wrong movement and he would suffocate before his knight can reach him. Bollocks! Who taught a princess how to tie the demon's knots with such precision. Only a handful of people in Derkal could actually tie the demon's knots.

Alexander looked for weak points in her knots but he found none.

He could hear the horses more clearly. If they found him like this, not only will he be embarrassed but they would hunt down and kill Janessa for threatening the crown. It was just the rules of Aradale.

King Alexander knew what he had to do. To create space to free himself and recover his runaway bride, he had to dislocate his shoulder.

Son of a tooth! Alexander cursed slightly as he slammed his right shoulder into the huge tree in front of him twice. He would deal with the pain later.

He blocked the pain and closed his eyes. He could hear her running footsteps. She had gone the wrong way... again. The path she took would lead her directly to the cliff. And she would fall to her death in an instant.

His only chance was to commandeer a horse, a bow and an arrow. Alexander knew he had to fix his shoulder.

Son of a tooth! He cursed again as he removed the rope of his body and slam his shoulder back in place. It hurt more now and he didn't do it properly but he had no time to refix it.

One of his knight approached and Alexander lifted himself on a tree high enough to allow him knock off the knight and at the same time jump on the moving horse.

The king's knights were required to carry a bow and arrows. And Alexander was an excellent marksman.

He rode on the horse towards Janessa. He won't reach her on time. He picked up a bow and an arrow and aimed it at her shoulder. If he missed the harmless spot on her shoulder, she would bleed to death in minutes and if he didn't stop her, she would be dead in minutes too. He let the arrow go.

Jamie's mind went blank when she felt the sharp pain penetrate her shoulder. She vaguely remembered the wetness of her dress as blood dripped down her shoulder. She could hear someone curse out and then she went blank.

Alexander got down from the horse and ran to where her limp body was. Had he missed? He was so sure he could make the shot at such a distance until he doubted himself.

He checked her wound and it wasn't bleeding so much. He didn't miss! It was just a flesh wound and she would be good as new in a few days.

Sir Judd, his lead knight was the next to arrive. He was by his king's side in a minute and when he saw the limp body of his Queen, he moved even faster.

Sir Judd lifted the Queen up and carried her to the horse. He understood why the King had to shoot her. He saw the whole thing from distance but he could see Alexander struggle with what he had done to his wife. And now, it was left for sir Judd to race back to the castle with the Queen of Aradale before she bled to death on the ground.

Alexander followed behind closely. When they got to the castle the royal doctor was already there. Meg had anticipated that he might be hurt and kept the good doctor on stand by.

Alexander ordered for Janessa to be taken to his chambers instead.

The royal doctor examined Janessa.

"It is a flesh wound. One inch to the left and she would have bled to death in seconds, his Highness. I will leave two portions for the pain and another to prevent blood poisoning"

Alexander simply nodded and gestured for the doctor to be taken home by his knight.

He sat on the armchair in his room and watched her. There was a soft knock and princess Rosemund walked inside.

She went to her brother's side.

"I was worried. What happened?"

"I shot her. She tried to run and I shot her"

Rosemund knew it was just half of the story. She knew Alexander had a habit of making a story as short as possible and only retain parts that made him look like a monster.

"You saved her life, Alexander" When he looked at her, Rosemund added "Sir Judd saw what happened"

"It doesn't matter. I shot her"

Alexander stood up and opened the wardrobe and took out a chain.

It was a gold chain with fur cuffs.

"What are you doing, Alexander?" Rosemund asked him.

"Making sure the Queen of Aradale remains safe"

"By handcuffing a sick girl!" Rosemund objected violently.

Alexander took Janessa's left hand and slipped the cuff into her hand and chained the rest to the wall.

"Alexander, stop it!"

"Go to your chamber, now!" Alexander saw Rosemund's face and she was about to disobey him.

How can he expect the kingdom to obey him if he can even get his family to take a simple order.

"That's an order, young lady!"

Rosemund bowed. He was her brother but he was also her king.

"Yes, his Highness"
