Chapter sixty four: You before me

Lucinda May walked behind her Majesty, she had other matters to attend to while the Queen ate breakfast with her family. Lucinda knew she could visit her parents but she really didn't want to. She hadn't seen her parents, lord and lady Noah for almost twelve years ever since she ran off with Jared and married him without their blessing. They hadn't stripped her of her title but they refused to see her children. Her oldest was almost ten yet she had no idea what her grandparents looked like.

Lucinda saw that the Queen wasn't happy. Something must have happened between breakfast and now. She wondered what went wrong until she turned and saw Semeen walking behind them.

"Lady Lucinda May meet Ms Semeen, she is one of the Queen's ladies by the decree of the King. Ms Semeen, this is Lady Lucinda May, the Queen's advisor. You shall be working directly under her" Jamie made the introductions.

Now, Lucinda understood. She would ask Jamie about it later but right now, they had more pressing State matters to attend to. She led the Queen to the court and they sat down.

"I have made plans for appropriate lodgings in the castle for the king's guests, I just need my Queen's approval to seal the deal" Lucinda told her.

Jamie looked at the scrolls showing details of the lodging and she wanted to approve it when Semeen spoke.

"Her Majesty, if I may...I think it will be a terrible idea to lodge the king's guests in the castle. I suggest the forest cabins closer to the hunting ground. That way, you don't have to deal with drunken losers that can't hold their liquor or temper and ill-tempered brute who are also sore losers" Semeen advised her.

Semeen knew that it was a good idea and if the Queen thought she would simply sit and agree with everything just to get along then the Queen was wrong.

"That could work also, her Majesty!" Lucinda May thought about it for a while before she spoke. It made sense plus the nobles would enjoy a good cabin experience.

Semeen knew the Queen would regret the idea simply because she hated her and it was why it surprised her when she said instead "Go ahead and supervise the cabin arrangements Lucinda May. It was a good idea, Semeen"

Semeen was surprised. Lucinda May stood up to grab another set of scroll and pen to start making arrangements and left Semeen with the Queen for a second.

"You look surprised, Semeen"

"Because I am surprised, your majesty, you agreed with me" Semeen had a blank look now.

"I wasn't about to throw away a good idea because you are sleeping with my husband"

Semeen smiled. It felt like it, didn't it? She wondered if the Queen knew how wrong she was.

"Did I say something funny?" Jamie asked feeling her anger rise.

"No, your majesty but my Queen is wrong. I am not sleeping with the king" Semeen told her truthfully.

Jamie didn't know whether she should believe Semeen or not. Lucinda May returned with the scroll and the pen to start the preparation.

"Lucinda May, make a list of eligible ladies for the position of the Queen's Ladies in waiting. I think that's sums up what we have for the day. Semeen, you may leave" Jamie told the blue eyed girl.

Jamie knew that Ladies in waiting were supposed to be the Queen's ally but she had no idea how she felt about the girl. It was clear as day that Semeen wanted Alexander.

Semeen stood up and bowed to Queen and left, leaving only Lucinda May and Jamie alone.

"She is not sleeping with the King" Lucinda May told Jamie.

"I never said she was" Jamie muttered under her breath.

"But you were thinking it" Lucinda smiled. She wasn't Lucinda the Queen's advisor; she was Lucinda the Queen's friend at the moment. "I am telling you, your Majesty.... Semeen is not sleeping with his Highness"

"How do you know that, May?" Jamie asked her.

"Because the girl is red with envy of you, your majesty and I have seen the way his Highness looks at you. It's the same way Jared looks at me and that's a man in love with his wife" Lucinda reassured her.

Jamie was sure that Lucinda was mistaken but she remembered that the last time she was with the king, he kissed her feet. The thinking was giving Jamie a headache and she decided to change the subject.

"How are the children?"

"They are over the moon about their father's lordship declaration. Lily is insisting I put lady when addressing her. She insists she is Lady Lily of the house Jared" Lucinda laughed heartily and so did Jamie.

"She is adorable. Have you considered moving to Aradale? With you being my advisor and Jared as Royal chancellor, Aradale would be a suitable home, don't you think?"

"Yes, Milady...as soon as Jared and I can afford it we will! That will send my parents to the edge!" Lucinda May wasn't vengeful person but she wanted to see the look on her parents face when it is announced that Jared was the third most powerful man in the West and she was the Queen's advisor.

"I take it you are not close with your parents, Lady Lucinda May"

"I think their exact words were… I would never amount to anything if I stayed with Jared. I mean, they refused to see my babies" Lucinda May was sad.

"I am sorry. But you can afford Aradale. The royal councilor position comes with a councilor's quarters in Aradale and your position pays well I am told"

Lucinda smiled ear to ear and she wanted to say something when she was interrupted by Rachael.

"Milady, his Highness requires your presence in his chamber"

"Thank you, Rachael" Jamie watched as the girl left.

Jamie didn't want to go but she couldn't exactly disobey the king in the presence of his subject.

"Shall we continue this chat tomorrow, my husband requires my presence"
