Chapter seventy: screw the odds

The first ring of the bell made Jamie look up. Certain people were beginning to move to an inner room.

"What's the bell for?" Jamie asked.

"It's for all royalties. They are expected to sign an accord that prohibits them from carrying out any attack on each other" Sir Judd answered.

"But isn't everyone here, allies?" Jamie asked him.

"You see that man near the enormous candlestick?" Eileen pointed to towards the southern corner of the room.

Jamie nodded yet she had no idea who the man was.

"That is King Aubrey of Pax, a neighboring kingdom north of Koi. We are at war and without the accord we have to sign, we could simply send our Knights after each other" Eileen explained.

Jamie now understood. She beginning to find out that she had no knowledge of reigning.

Judd offered his arm to Queen Eileen and she took it.

Alexander had a minute to spare and so he approached his Queen.

"I see you found a new friend" he asked as soon as he was close to her.

"Queen Eileen is a delight. I specially liked it when she approached your Princess Matilda"

"She is not my princess!" Alexander told her through his clenched jaw. "And I know what you are planning, Janessa. Koi is a kingdom in the eastern hemisphere"

Jamie had a blank expression as she feigned ignorance.

"Really? I had no idea" if it was any other person apart from Alexander. They would believe her.

"Cut the crap! I know you are going to send word to your father through the lovely Eileen but I should tell you that if you do, I will have Queen Eileen's head delivered to you before dusk tomorrow. You will be signing her death warrant!"

Jamie clenched her fist and tightened her jaw.

"You are a monster, husband"

Alexander felt his heart thunder at her words.

"You have no idea how true that statement is. Rosemund and I will be in the inner room with kings, Queen regnant and representative of other kingdoms. Will you be okay on your own?"

Jamie blinked. The man should pick a persona and stick to it. He had gone from threatening her to worrying about her. It was fucking annoying, if Jamie was asked.

She simply walked away without uttering a word.

Jamie saw the young queen again later in the day. The hunt was tomorrow and everyone was showed to the cabin near the hunting grounds. The only ones who found lodging in the castle were Queens and wives of the men lodged at the cabin.

Jamie stood at the balcony when the young queen approached her again.

"The West is a beautiful place, your majesty" Eileen smiled like the moonlight made the kingdom even more astonishing.

"She is a beauty indeed" Jamie faced the Queen "was your lodging not to your taste, Queen Eileen?"

Eileen looked out the balcony and closed her eyes. She took in deep lungful of air. She spoke but her eyes remained closed.

"My Chamber is perfect but nothing beats the breath of fresh air. It soothes the soul and your company is far more delightful than mine, your Majesty" Eileen took another breathe.

Jamie watched her for a moment. Then she realized it. The queen was lonely.

Jamie watched her as she took out the hair band that held her hair up and it fell softly to her shoulders. Eileen push her strawberry blonde hair away from her face to behind her ears. She took another breathe.

"It's must be lonely" Jamie whispered.

"What must be lonely?" Eileen asked her with her eyes still closed.

"Being a Queen regnant, when the odds are clearly against you" Jamie didn't know whether she was stepping on a line but she spoke freely like they were close confidant.

"Screw the odds, Queen Jamie....screw the odds" Eileen whispered to her.

Jamie had never seen a girl curse like a sailor before.

"I don't believe in odds, you see. Odds were I was never supposed to be Queen. I had two older healthy half brothers and a father who were here one day and the next they were gone. My odds at birth was to be married off to the highest bidder to gain more power for my kingdom, then one day I wake up and everyone before me on the line of succession to the throne was gone. And I was proclaimed Queen of Koi. So, I say screw the odds, I make my own destiny" Eileen watched the young queen. Was she going to take an offense at her profanity? Was queen Jamie going to take one look at her and declare she was insane?

Instead Eileen saw her smile.

"I like you, Queen Eileen and I agree with you. Odds doesn't work. Odds said I wasn't supposed to be Queen of the west but somehow I am. Screw the odds and you should call me, Jamie. All my friends do"

"Call me Eileen then, no does anyway but still do it!"

The two women looked out the clear skies for a while.

"I am lonely. I am constantly surrounded by people everyday of my life but I am lonely, Jamie" Eileen told her.

"Shall we do something fun, then? Like crash the hunting party disguise as boys?" Jamie had a mischievous smile on her face.

"Proper queens don't disguise themselves as lads to crash a sacred tradition"

Jamie knew it as soon as she made the suggestion. Eileen wasn't like her. She was a rule follower but before Jamie could say any other thing, Eileen added.

"Good thing, I am not a proper Queen. Let's do it!"

Jamie was just about to put on her jubilation face when someone coughed behind them to get their attention.

"Sir Judd!" Jamie almost jumped out of her skin. She wondered how much sir judd heard.

"Your majesties" Judd bowed to them.. His face was still cold and expressionless.
