Chapter seventy eight: Oh you made it....Thank who now?

Jamie felt a little bit of chill in her legs and right fingers tips. When she tried to move her left palm she felt a sting of pain go through her and her eyes flew open instantly. She had beads of sweat rolling down her forehead as her eyes darted across the room she was inside.

Where was she?

The room was spacious with a side dedicated to books. Jamie had never seen so many books before in her life and that was saying a lot since she was an avid reader.

The more she tried to keep her eyes open the more her eyelids pulled together until she stopped fighting them. Then she slipped back to the empty peaceful forest and she stayed there for a while.

Semeen wiped her face when she opened her eyes for the second time that day. For some reason, the pain in her left hand was intensified and she bit her lower lip and waited for the pain to pass.

Jamie looked around the room now, she was surrounded by Lucinda May and Semeen.

"Thank the gods of the sun you are awake, your majesty. Here, take a sip for the pain" Lucinda May pushed a teaspoon of brownish liquid into her mouth. Jamie jerked up and pushed the spoon away.

"What is that? Cow dung!" She yelled at her.

"No, Milady... its pain portion. It's effective" Lucinda May answered with a smile.

"Well, it tastes like a cow's ass" Jamie murmured.

"I will get the king. He will be happy to see that you are awake" Lucinda May wandered off before Jamie could say anything. And she was left alone with Semeen who hasn't said a word to her.

"What are you doing here?" Jamie queried with a hostile voice. The last thing she wanted was for her husband's possible mistress to see her in her weakened state.

Her hair must be a mess and her skin was pale and dry. If she had been taking the cow dung pain portion for God knows how long then she must smell like one. She needed a bath and a thorough scrub with vinegar and sweet scent.

"I should go then, your majesty. I don't want to distress you anymore than you already are" Semeen bowed to her and tried to leave.

There was something different about her. Jamie watched with curious eyes. She walked the same, spoke the same minus the arrogance yet she felt different. She looked sad and broken.

Was Semeen sad that she didn't die? Or was she sad that she survived the attack? Jamie couldn't wait long for her to disappear but the girl turned and spoke to her.

"You shouldn't risk your life for things and people you don't know, your majesty"

Jamie wanted to tell her off. It wasn't any of her business but she remembered the girl's mother died of an arrow shot meant for the king.

"Is this because of your mother, Semeen? It this because she took the arrow meant for my husband and died because of it? It's understandable if my injuries bring sad memories to you" Jamie spoke to her in a low voice.

"This has nothing to do with my mother. My mother died protecting her king. It was her duty but you can't go about risking your life for wolves you don't know! You can't put yourself in front of an arrow to save one!"

Semeen yelled at her. Jamie was taken aback. The girl was upset but Jamie didn't know why.

"I couldn't stand and watch the brown wolf get hurt..."

"You are Queen! Your job isn't to protect things or people you don't know. It's to be protected"

"You are right" Jamie answered. Semeen took a breath of air as relief swept through her but it was short-lived when Jamie spoke.

"I am queen! My duty is to protect my people... maybe even more than others. If I am not willing to die for my friends then, what am I even doing?" Jamie answered truthfully.

"You are making it difficult for me"

"What am I making difficult, Semeen?"

"You are making it difficult for me to hate you. I was always willing to die for you because you are Queen but now...I want to keep you alive even if that is the last thing I ever do"

With that she opened the door and left.

Alexander was announced in court with the rest of royal guests. Crown prince Dempsey, king Clark, King Alphonsus and two second sons of southern kings, princess Rhoda, princess Maltida and her father King Caleb and then the Queen Eileen. Everyone was present in the king's court.

"King Alexander and Princess Rosemund of Aradale"

Alexander walked inside with his sister behind him. Everyone stood up until he was at his rightful place.

"My queen was attacked and I will not let that go unpunished. I shall set an example but apparently my hands are tied because of the accord we signed yesterday" Alexander spoke with a pained expression.

"We welcomed you to our home but we didn't give permission for your knights to try and kill our Queen....my sister. My brother and I can't order for public execution of the culprit but you will or you stand to make the west your enemy. Believe me, you don't want that" Rosemund spoke with the conviction of an injured tigress.

"King Alexander, do we have the names of the idiots that tried to murder a queen" Prince Dempsey asked. In his opinion only idiots would poke hornets' nest.

"Yes. Sir Craig of Bel and many more knights" Rosemund answered.

"Did your Queen identify her house to the knights?" One of the kings asked.

"That is a very...very stupid question, King Alphonsus" queen Eileen jeered at the king despite his annoyance.

"I say we call a council of kings and queens. Let's decide among us" Eileen suggested with a smile. She loved getting on the nerves of arrogant kings and spoilt brats.

Almost everyone agreed.

"Then it's so ordered"

Alexander turned and walked out.
