Chapter seventy nine: Honey, weren't you injured yesterday?

Lucinda May took care of Jamie like a mother caring for her sick child. She wiped the sweat from her face and lifted the cup close to her mouth to take a sip of water.

Jamie coughed slightly as the water went down the wrong pipe. She sat upright and rested her back on the soft pillow. But everything ached and everything felt Injured. She coughed one more.

"You don't have to take care of me, Lucinda" Jamie complained lightly. She was grateful to see a familiar face. It was better than having strangers tend to her like she was a bothersome duty they had to perform.

"I don't mind. I have to ensure you eat properly and drink liquid at certain interval to aid in healing, your majesty"

Jamie knew she should just say thank you to a good friend.

"Thank you, May"

Jamie touched her forehead. Her messy hair clung to her face like a second skin. like she had been caught in a terrible storm that wasn't letting up. She felt nausea rise from her stomach as the smell of the cow dung portion hit her nostrils. She coughed again.

"What's the issue with Semeen? She was behaving rather strange when I woke up" Jamie inquired from her friend.

Jamie wanted to gawk at her image on a mirror. Was her black hair really standing up like it was glued with gum? Or was it just her imagination. Either way she needed a comb...fast. Her mind darted back to Semeen as Lucinda May spoke.

"It was strange, Milady. She wouldn't leave you unattended...she wiped you and fed you portions. If I don't know well, I would say she was bothered by your injury, your majesty"

Jamie felt the heat more now. And unlike some blessed maidens whose skins shine like a polish stone whenever they swear, Jamie wanted to dunk in an ice cold bath to return color to her face. She must look awful...pale like a dead body.

Her black saturated hair was getting heavier and salty droplet was beginning to run down her cheeks. That was it! Enough!

"Lucinda May, I need a cold bath! I would prefer an ocean but a good old fashioned bathe would suffice!" The droplets ran down her cheek like summer drizzle.

"I will get Rachael to arrange for a bathe, your majesty"

"I can help with that" the voice startled both Jamie and her advisor.

"Your highness" Lucinda May stood up to acknowledge Alexander's presence. He stood by the door with a neutral face.

"I will get Rachael to arrange for a bathe, Milady" Lucinda May bowed and step out.

Alexander strolled inside. Jamie preferred he didn't. She looked awful with the black knotted hair and she must smell awful too like the cow dung portion she was forced to drink.

"How are you feeling?"

Alexander sat down on the bed close to her feet. He caressed her lips with his finger and stared intently at her.

"I am fine. When can I go back to my Chamber?" Jamie queried him.

If he could just take a step back from her, it would do wonders for her frantic mind. But he didn't.

"Soon, Monisha. Soon"

He had a dark shadow like he didn't have a good night sleep. His posture was stooped too.

"You shouldn't touch me, Milord. I must look horrible with messy hair and I must smell like the cow dung portion Lucinda May forced me to take"

If Alexander wasn't busy being worried he would have smiled. Was his mid-knight bride worried about her appearance when he was around? Alexander would call it progress.

"Monisha, the first time we met you were wearing a bogus tunic and an oversized pant. Your hair was shorter and you had a bad temper, I kissed you then and I will kiss you now"

Alexander moved closer to her but Jamie hopped out of the way and landed on her feet.

"Aww! Aww!" She moaned as pain ripped through her like gunpowder exposed to fire.

"Get away from me! Stay away....far....far away" she said in a singing voice as she kept hoping like she had an injury on her foot too. She wouldn't let her hazel eyed angel kiss her while she had cow dung breathe. But she really needed to stop hopping.

"Okay. I will keep my distance. Will you stop hopping now?"

Jamie stopped. She wondered what kind of trouble she got her husband into with her night activity last night.

"How much trouble did I cause for you, Alexander?" Her brows furrowed and her lips pressed together.

"I showed them the necklace. The symbol of my father's house but they didn't believe me. They took my symbol too" she complained softly.

"It doesn't matter. They are going to pay for hurting you" Alexander's voice held a promise for revenge and it was unwavering.

"Did...Sir Craig die? One of the wolves took a chunk of his leg" Jamie asked. She would hate it if she caused the death of a knight from another kingdom and Alexander had to make amends on her behalf.

Alexander recognized the guilt on her face. His wife was once again taking the blame for something that should have never happen before.

"You shouldn't have wandered off without protection but don't for once think what happened was your fault"

Oh great! He wasn't blaming her. It was a relief for Jamie but she still needed to bathe.

"Alexander, I need..."

"I know...come on; I will sneak you out before the doctor comes back. Do you want a river or a good old fashioned bathe, honey?" Alexander asked as he loosened up.

"A river" Jamie wasn't certain whether he was joking or serious.

"Come on!"

Alexander led her through a hidden doorway to the secret stable. They took a horse and they rode off towards the secluded river near the dead zone. It wasn't wise but it was exactly what Jamie needed.. Her laughter echoed as the wind pressed against her face with the promise of a cold river at her destination. What more could a kidnapped bride ask for?
