Chapter Eighty: Under the spell of a cold river...I shall dream of escape.

Soon, Jamie could hear the river as it called out to her. Their horse slowed down considerably to a paced walking. She leaned into the solid chest of the man she had come to depend on. She felt the unwavering strength and a promise of endless possibilities if she wanted. It was new kind of feeling and she liked it.

Jamie could let go of her body weight and he would keep her safe no matter what. But it didn't stop her from holding the rope around the horse gently even as she leaned into him. She had never been able to trust any man completely with the exception of the man that loves her most - King Jared.

"It's like the river is calling out to me to come find it" her voice was a whisper. Her eyes temporarily closed as she felt the slight brush of Alexander's lips on the nape of her neck. It tingled and it made her smile.

"Then let's find it, Monisha"

"You weren't supposed to kiss any part of me until I have bathed, Milord" giggles escaped her as she felt his lips on her neck again but she didn't stop him. They were incorrigible after all.

Soon, the splashing of water and the gentle music of the cool breeze invade Jamie's ears. Alexander helped her down the horse and she wandered off towards the cold river. What she felt when her feet stepped inside the near freezing river were near pure Bliss; just like the ones she felt whenever Alexander touched her.

Her cold feet helped clarify things. Oh God! She almost died last night. She would have died a hostage and her spirit would have been trapped for all eternity! Without the disgusting sweats to keep her mind occupied, last night event came crashing down on her poor eyes.

Damn it! She was going to cry. Bollocks! Alexander was going to see her.

Jamie quickly glanced back to the image of her husband and he was still securing the horse. She looked around, it was a beautiful place. There was a hill with waterfall left of her and pebbles beneath the strangely clear river. The place seemed secluded as it was breathtaking...too bad she was going to use it as cover for her tears. She pulled at the dress she wore and luckily, it was loose. One of the advantages of sick people's clothes, it gave her all the space normal dresses didn't.

She dropped one of her hand and slipped out of the dress leaving her almost naked with her undergarments as the only clothing. It wasn't proper to disrobe in front of a man but Alexander had seen much more before.

She took a step into the river and another and another until she was almost submerged.

"Janessa! What are you doing?" Alexander watched in horror as his wife was almost envelope by the river. He raced towards her. She was too sick to weather the river on her own.

Jamie raised her injured hand to avoid getting water on it, as she dunked till there nothing left of her above the water surface....just her bandage fist standing like a lit touch that had the power to keep her alive.

Alexander only had time to take off his tunic as he dove right into the river to rescue her. It's been almost a minute since she went under.

He splashed around looking for her for forty seconds before he found her with her eyes open staring at the bed of the river. He pulled her to the surface immediately.

"What is wrong with you?!" Alexander could hear his own heartbeat. He stared at the woman in front of him. She was clueless about the scare she gave him.

"Why did you do that for?"

Jamie blinked. She used her right palm to wipe her face. She was underwater having the time of her life and next someone was pulling her out with so much force that she drank some of the river water. Was an apology too much for Alexander? Instead he was watching her with those hazel eyes filled with both rage and panic.

"Why did you do that?" Jamie asked again.

She was grateful for the wet face, it hid her tears perfectly but even Jamie knew it won't last forever. Sooner or later, Alexander will figure out she was crying.

He grabbed her shoulder roughly and shook her hard.

"Why do you keep trying to die on me? Why won't you stay put long enough for me to protect you?!"

Alexander realized he was shaking her too late and when he did, he took his hands away immediately. Jamie felt her cheeks wet as tears slipped down. There was no cover anymore, just plain old tears and the heavy pain in her chest.

"I am sorry. Jamie, I am sorry" Alexander moved closer to her. His footsteps small and uneven, he half expected her to shoo him away but she didn't. She simply wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face in his chest.

"I was so scared but I didn't show it. Papa says we can't let our opponent see us scared. So, I didn't show them. You are not an opponent, are you Alex?"

Her arms clutched to him for comfort but it was more of protection. Alexander could feel her walls crumble and he knew he had to hold her together until she was back to hating him... until she could put them walls up again. He would be on the outside of the walls, yet he still envelope her body with his strong arms. He wanted to keep her safe.

Jamie felt lightheaded like she was about to float away into the atmosphere like some magic welding witch. Her legs felt useless and balance was out of the question.

She almost died a hostage!

Her legs gave out and she thought she would sink back into the ice cold river but she didn't. Huh? Alexander had been keeping her upright the whole time. Who would have thought that?

"You are not my opponent now, are you?" Jamie asked him again in between sobs. It was a miracle he understood her. She was incoherent.

"No, sweetheart… I am not your opponent"

Alexander didn't add that he was never her opponent to begin with.
