Chapter Eighty one: Calm in the midst of chaos.

"Here is so peaceful. Do we have to go back?" Jamie inquired from him.

She had no idea when she went from sobbing to lying on Alexander's chest on the river banks. He had pulled out a blanket from the small bag on the horse and laid it on the floor. And they have been lying there for quite some time now.

Just lying there with only the sound of the splashing river as music, Jamie wanted to stay there for as long as humanly possible. Here he wasn't the king and she wasn't his kidnapped bride. They were just Alexander and Jamie.

Alexander agreed with her. The river bank was peaceful but they do have to go back. He had a kingdom to govern and people to punish.

"We can stay a while, Monisha. We are not in a hurry"

Jamie stared at the sun lazily. She had to dim her eyes as rays of sunlight went directly to her green eyes and bounced off. She closed her eyes and snuggled closer to Alexander.

"It's so peaceful; I want to rest my heavy eyes"

"Then rest them, Janessa. Like I said, we will take as long as you want"

Jamie's eyes started to pull together like they were on cue. She tried to keep them open but it was easier to keep them close and so she did. But before she allowed herself to be carried away by the wheels of slumber, she heard herself talking about Max.

"You should meet Max. You will get along very well, Alexander. As he reminds me of you. He is my willful furry brave friend"

Alexander agreed to disagree with her. Max was currently giving him the silent treatment. He has been calling him for hours but still no peep.

Max! Come on buddy! Alexander called out again but the wolf wasn't bulging. Who knew his half could keep such a grudge...like some wimpy little girl.

Alexander could feel someone knocking to be let inside his mind. He recognized the scent. It was Semeen. She must have followed them.

(This better be a good reason, Semeen. You are intruding, again)

Alexander had better control of his link now and he could let a wolf in or he could shut them out depending on his preference.

(Your highness, we need to move up the rescue mission. According to the gossip going around, prince Dempsey's father is close to finding the werewolves' hide out...I am afraid but it's now or never) Semeen's voice contained the urgency she wanted to stress on.

(Fine. We leave at sun down...just me and the knights. We can't have what happened the last time happen)

(Your highness, I have to come with you. They would never trust you unless I do)

Alexander thought about it. It was easier to accept than to argue with her and she had a point.

(I have two demands. First, you will do exactly as I say or you won't be coming back with me to the West and secondly, you won't step in front of an arrow to protect me. Can you obey such?) Alexander was really serious. They last time he took one of the risky mission, someone died to save him and he wasn't about to let it happen again. After waiting for about three seconds and there was no reply from Semeen, Alexander tried to push her out of his link.

(Okay. Fine, I will do as you've asked, Wolf king)

(Excellent, now be gone as I enjoy the rest of my time with my wife, Semeen. Walk back to the pack. And don't think I don't hear them purring at the background)

(They are curious about the Luna. It's normal. They want to get to know the human that fought with them, your highness)

Alexander closed his eyes and took a breath of air. He watched the woman asleep on his arms and it was a thing of a miracle. She had let her walls down and she was yet to build them up. Label him selfish but he wanted to spend every minute of this rare period with her.

(Soon, Alpha Luna....tell everyone soon. Try not to disturb me again, if you can help it)

Alexander was about to push Semeen out of his mind when Max spoke to her.

(Semeen, inform my sister that we would be needing southerners clothing again and she has to assume authority when Alexander leaves. You are dismissed)

As soon as Semeen left. Alexander searched for his wolf again but he was gone. Now, it was getting on his nerves again. They had a fight; bid deal...the sooner he got over it the better for them. Alexander wanted to ignore Max for as long as he ignored him. Just let the enmity feaster like a sore. But Max had saved his wife and he was injured at the process. Alexander should be grateful.

"Max" he whispered out loud now. "We need to talk, dear friend"

No reply.

"Friends fight all the time, Maximus. They fight and they make up"

"Friends don't call each other, nothing Alexander" he spoke at last in a tiny voice that sounded like a pin dropping.

"Don't tell me you are holding a grudge, Maximus?"

"You called me nothing. I am Alpha that can't live with his pack because I am stuck with you, everyday of our lives. Before she came around, I was just a passenger, helplessly observing from a distance and had to keep you safe every full moon. And now, I protect you even when you aren't aware of it. I am the reason you are still alive! I am not nothing!"

Alexander knew now, he had said what he shouldn't have out of anger. Something that wasn't true to begin with and it had hurt Max. He should apologize and ask for forgiveness or he could let him know why and what caused his behavior.

"You are not nothing, Max. You are my wolf and my best friend"
